April Times

I just got back from the most exhausting wedding I’ve ever been to. My hubby’s cousin married an Indian girl so they had a traditional Barat ceremony at the buttcrack of dawn, followed by a luncheon, then a second Christian ceremony, cocktail hour, followed up by a reception. I got probably 1 hour of sleep between Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I wish there were more traditional, heartier food options but hey, nobody asked my opinion on catering ;). The luncheon offered 3 vegetarian curries and paneer fingers (okay, can someone explain to me why paneer is ALWAYS so firm, hard and rubbery? It looks like it could be tofu or mozzarella sticks, but I’m constantly disappointed by its stubbornly chewy and flavorless texture…). The cocktail hour featured some so-called Chinese and Mexican appetizer stations but since they were made by Indian caterers, the flavors were indescribably “off” and contained absolutely no real ingredients from either culture. I watched one of John’s cousins bite into a juicy-looking meatball with gusto only to realize it was a mashed beans and celery mixture. The late dinner actually consisted of the same, tiresome items as the luncheon’s so I could only wait for dessert time to be saved. 100% vegetarian wedding banquet courses = never again. Little did I know that the brief road stop we made during our 6-hr drive to Farmingdale, NJ turned out to be the best meal I would have all weekend…

This whole wedding was a colorful, extravagant mess! I mean mess in that no one (including the bride and groom) knew what was happening during the Indian ceremony and with 370+ people in one building, there was no guidance on which room to file into, or what blessing what currently going on. For the first 2 hours, I was either mindlessly following this horse doing laps around this country club because the bride’s family was so late to arrive, or I was pinned up against the entrance of the main hall because some sort of ceremony was going on where no one could see or hear anything. For the next 2 hours, the Indian side of the wedding just milled around, talking loudly amongst themselves, eating breakfast all while the actual Barat ceremony was going on. It was a confusing hullabaloo!

What an experience! I was so exhausted I had to take a sick day on Monday because of extreme soreness and vomiting (this I expect came from my disagreement of Indian food). However, it was a lot of “firsts” for me: first Indian wedding, first wedding I’ve attended being pregnant, first NJ wedding. Squeezing into both dresses (bought last year) at five months pregnant is no small feat. I’m hoping to goodness I’ll survive the second wedding in Virginia…

My April Ipsy bag added a mini duo nail polish set to my collection! This deep violet with grayish cast and pinkish nude went well together. I added a swipe of pearl pink topcoat to the accent nails. This ring is also my latest obsession. It’s a canary yellow CZ platinum plated stunner that looks so much more expensive than it is! The band is so delicately thin! I love the cushion cut and the crazy sparkle it gives off! I found out the hard way that it’s also pretty weak…two days into wearing the thing and one of the tiny CZ stones already chipped off on the halo! Rats!

I’m modeling over the book I recently finished: The Truth About Andy Bloom, by Mark Lages. It’s an interesting story about a writer who is supposedly the son of Salvador Dali!

From the official Cafe Du Monde box mix, we fried up beignets at home! They were easier than I expected and tasted great! This is definitely happening again.

John went crazy two weeks ago and bought a crap ton amount of fresh fruit. He made breakfast smoothies for us one day and here’s the list of ingredients:

-cantaloupe

-kiwis

-canned peach syrup

-few canned peach slices

-fresh papaya

-crushed ice

The result was tropical deliciousness!

Shiny Objects

Pregnancy is hard, y’all. I’m miserable 24/7 with all my never-ending symptoms of nausea, vomiting, heat strokes, sore hips, clumsiness, and many many more. I’ve hit the 18th week marker and I’m still throwing up with the gusto of any first trimester mom. What gives?!

Online shopping is pretty therapeutic so I bought myself a ring. And oh, what a ring! This might be the prettiest ring I own right now! It’s a 3-stone champagne morganite with CZ stones all up around it set in sterling silver. The stones are lab created but so what? Gorgeous as can be! Don’t mind my chipping manicure as you stare into its amber depths.

Now this is the ring that my hubby chose for me on Valentine’s Day, or more accurately, as a present for carrying his child. It’s the hardest thing I’ll ever do. So this massive thing is a pink tourmaline cut in a cabochon style set in 10K yellow gold. It’s big and bold but not my style so we went back to exchange and resize.

This beauty is very special to me. I felt like a giddy high roller in that jewelry shop as I designed my own custom ring from scratch! The shop had many natural gems to choose from but I ended up selecting this brilliant cut peridot as it’s the birthstone of my hubby and also of my unborn child. Just look at that delightful pear green hue! Then I chose a 14K white gold setting with 2 mini side stone diamonds. How simple and classy is this ring? It did cost a pretty penny but this particular jewelry store didn’t have a return policy so we had to exchange it for at least that value and more. The band looks fine in pictures but there is hardly any weight and feel to it. Half of it is hollow and super light. I do prefer simple, non-stone studded bands but I don’t mind a little heft and weight to them!

Summer Trips

Is it considered cheating on my cat if I’m cuddling another somewhere else? This pedigree Persian kitten is literally a cloud in corporeal form. I felt pure bliss when I touched its creamy perfect coat of fluff. Who knew a company picnic would become a petting zoo?! Best picnic ever.

Taken in Center Moriches, Long Island on our annual duck BBQ trip. This local pond was recently renovated and very neat and pretty looking. I might have looked cool but it was 95 degrees in the shade that day :(. Apparently no one in this whole region has central A/C so we spent most of the weekend huddled up in this one tiny room with the window unit propped up. Bring on the SPF!

Holiday Beach was quite breezy at 7pm when we went so that felt great. I think the salty bay breeze gave my locks some volume there!

Back to Pittsburgh! The Allegheny Cemetery had a beautiful fountain and we had a nice Sunday walk here after gorging ourselves at La Gourmandine. I don’t get a lot of chances to wear my yellow silk shift dress from Hangzhou so I’m mugging for the camera right here.

This structured polka dot skirt is very interesting–it’s pretty much made of plastic and the stiffest piece of garment I own. Washing it was interesting too…

Mani time! It’s been a while because my last mani lasted so long. The pink is China Glaze and the accent nail is Sally Hansen opal fire. The look is inspired by watermelon lemonade…if that’s a thing.

Spring Decor

I made a shadowbox craft! I used thick craft paper from Target as a patterned background and glued some shells way back from an Atlantic City trip! These origami swans are actually folded by the hubs because I do cranes. I made him fold a whole batch while I folded cranes in all different paper for centerpiece decoration at our wedding. I also included a recent wedding anniversary gift from my sister. They are keychains that say: “moon of my life” and “my sun and my stars.” Being the big Game of Thrones fans we are, it was a perfect gift! It’s pretty romantic to be addressed like Daenerys ;).

Okay, I am flipping out over my new shoes. They came extremely fast from China and they actually fit! I am rocking these Lolita heels at the office today like a fashion winner. I have on an airy white lace dress with the skirt part made of a floral patterned chiffon. So spring, you guys.

Oh, and here’s my mother’s day present from Pangur Ban. She done brought me a snake, y’all. No joke. Here is the wriggly, live proof. Funny thing is that she brought me a snake 2 days before and I had specifically told her not to do it again. Kids these days!

This is from the first time she brought over a snake. Take a close look because these 2 snakes are different! I screamed bloody murder and was legit about to faint. My husband picked it up casually and tossed it down our hill but I’m inclined to think that it’s definitely made its way back by now…

What he needs to do is take it with him to the airport when he leaves every week. I’m sure movie fans will love it–snakes on a plane, am I right?

Mani & Pedi!

My bestie visiting from Columbus stayed with me this past weekend and we packed it with activities! We woke up at the butt crack of dawn (phrase she loves to use) on a Saturday to adhere Megan’s Loft’s hours. I went for a feminine spring lady look. The pink color is Suzie Pedal Faster and the accent nail is this soft purple with a metallic sheen that I forgot the name of. I asked for square shaped nails but I’m afraid she cut them too short :(.

Behold! My magnificently hued little toes! My first pedicure at a salon was quite nice. This is a new OPI color in a gorgeous shimmery periwinkle. The hot bubbly water, scrub and massage chair was definitely pampering! I can see how addicting it all is! This is perfect timing too because I’m counting on these colors lasting me ’til I hit the beach in San Diego!

Leanna and I chatted candidly…maybe a little too candidly in front of our nail tech ladies. We got more than few raised eyebrows and laughs. But hey, what’s spoken at salons never leave salons so I shall say no more. This also just naturally happens between besties who know each other too well. It has been a year since I last saw my girl, so we were throwing entirely too much shade and gossip!

Right after our nail appointment, we left for my coworker’s baby shower/belated wedding reception. Interesting combo, right? It was at a gorgeously upscale winery and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. These white chocolate party favors were the best! SO CUTE.

Look at that shimmery pink frosting! Hey hey! The topper is a plastic ring that fit on my middle finger perfectly :). My Mimiboo has claimed this as her new favorite toy already.

What a pretty ethnic rainbow we make!

And here is Mimiboo sleeping like a zombie. Her cuteness is just off the charts cray.

This is the hand cream I currently use at my desk at work. I’m obsessed with it. It’s Tonymoly’s banana hand milk in a squeezable tube that smells like banana candy! It’s pleasant but I would say the smell goes away too quickly. I reapply often so it’s depleting at a pretty fast pace. I call it my nanner.

Hey hey, I got new kicks! Ordered these from China and they are just like the picture! Who doesn’t love a pair of platform oxfords?! They are a size 4.5 though so my feet are shuffling around in them :(. TOO BIG. Even in China, I am Thumbalina-sized.

Lilac Days

New week, new mani! I just got this in my Ipsy bag. I took a 2-month hiatus from Ipsy because I was disappointed with my May bag. I put in my profile that I do not want lipglosses, haircare items or eyeshadows and of course, all 3 of those items appeared in my bag. The May bag was a plain canvas material and had words on it–pretty ugly compare to what Ipsy usually churns out.

But yeah, the August bag is 80% cool for me. I LOVE the houndstooth bag first of all, and my fave product of all is the full size nail polish! It retails for $15 on Trust Fund’s website. This dark lilac tone is called Elegantly Wasted; very Essie-esque. It brushes on so smoothly and 2 coats is all you need for that perfect opaque goodness. On the ring fingers, I brushed on Sally Hansen’s 3D fuzzy effect. It’s a huge pain to remove but it’s a fun tactile novelty! The down side is that Trust Fund’s staying power is weak. This is the 3rd day of my manicure and I see chips already!

Just wanted to show off my H&M floral print summer dress. It’s a struggle getting in this thing because it has absolutely no stretch. Oy vey. This picture was taken at a NH park on the very top of a watchtower!

More pretty flower pictures from the pretty Elizabeth Park in CT!

Happy Friday, bloggers!

New England Vacay

What a week for me! It was splendid to be able to be with my hubs even while he was working. I have the flexibility to work remotely as needed and did so last week at Hartford, CT. I started the trip off with a new mani, of course.

I brushed on Ulta’s Tinseltown, H&M’s metallic seafoam and a top coat of VS gold glitter. Lasting power of these colors were crap compared to my other nail polishes, but I liked the contrast and slightly Barney-retro look.

The night we got into Hartford, hubs took me to J. Timothy’s Taverne for their nation’s 2nd best wings! They are done up in “dirty style” meaning = sauced, fried, then sauced again. They weren’t very crunchy or meaty but they were well seasoned and definitely packed a punch in the zest department. The sauce selection was limited but the sauces themselves were incredibly tasty. I had the Gold BBQ and hubs had the Thai Sweet Chili. Expensive place for wings but hey, vacay time!

The next night, he took me to chic West Hartford where we enjoyed a nice Thai meal at the Silk Elephant. For dessert, I got to visit Noah Webster! Check out that gorgeous blue sky!

I dragged hubby to the Elizabeth Rose Garden and we gawked, smelled and took pictures of pretty flowers. He has been working in this area for 6 months and never even heard of this place. I’m a garden hunter so I will smell out these places! It was truly a delight to be able to walk around the flowers and watch the ducks in the pond in the middle of the work week!

Fast forward to Wallis Sands beach in New Hampshire while visiting his sister and seeing her new house. I’m merely showing off my retro bikini; it stays dry the whole time because I’m not crazy enough to dip myself in the frigid Atlantic waters at twilight.

Onto the Boston Public Park! I simply loved these weeping willows that provided some sort of shade in the 92 degree scorching day. This was taken right before embarking on the Freedom Trail, which made me a hot mess afterwards ;).

Found this gem in the Commons and couldn’t resist takin’ off my shoes and cooling off in this majorly accessible water feature! I love cities that have this for all the children/tourists to enjoy!

Last day of my New England trip: Salem, MA. I was here for a hot 1.5 hrs but we made the most of it! I HAD to visit the Witch Memorial. My favorite play in the world is The Crucible and I am astonished that most of his characters were real life people. RIP Giles Corey and his infamous last words “more weight.”

Crossed off a bucket list item! Slurped raw oysters at the Sea Level oyster bar–I used a combination of lemon, horseradish, cocktail sauce and this pickled mango and pepper concoction. I thoroughly enjoyed the experience! I tried 5 different types of oysters and the salty sea water brine really helps to flavor that plump piece of oyster.

I only had time to snap a picture of the House of 7 Gables before getting on my horrible AA flight back to Pittsburgh. I was joking that the gods must have been too jelly of my wonderful week and just had to throw a wrench on my travel plans the last day. The hubs thinks it’s just the entire inadequacy of American Airlines. That at least is definitely true.

What a wonderful week! What joyous eats and flavors! What fun seeing friends and family!
