Independence Mani

Check it out! It’s my own modified 4th of July mani! Pink, sky blue and cream always screams independence to me ;). I used Essie’s Bachelorette Party and Bikini So Teeny. Then I used 2 thick layers of this Sally Hansen French manicure nude color as the accent and topped it off with Victoria’s Secret gold glitter topcoat!

My gorgeous water lilies bloomed in my own pond! They bloom during the day and shyly fold back into a bulb at night. It was totally hard capturing this.

My favorite color of day lilies has to be the mauve and yellow blooms. This year, I even got some daisies!

Mimiboo holds my hand for comfort. We haven’t had a kitten moment for a while so I stayed in this one position for 20 minutes. So…stiff…must…keep cat from jumping off…

Matte Mani

This picture makes the gold look all shiny but it is not. This OPI Gwen Stefani holiday edition gold is a refreshingly pale with a smooth matte finish. It dries so quickly and just looks super chic. The alternating lilac color is from Trust Fund Beauty. Their brushes are wide and full and provide great coverage. The gold chips pretty quickly but this purple lasts a while.

I am going gaga over all the flowers blooming around my house. They are really taking their time this year! This time last year, I had every color of day lilies and hydrangeas. My favorite of the bunch always bloom first and this time I managed to capture the rare beauty! Look at that rich, lush violet color with a bold prick of complementary yellow. Gorgeous! These do well right in my pond so I don’t have to water them! My water lilies have bloomed this year too but for some reason they close up at night and I can never get a picture. Sneaky things…

My Mimiboo makes her appearance! She is 1 year old now and coming up on our adoption anniversary (June 28th). I know this date so well yet I question when I got my marriage license all the time. Seriously–like August 13th? 16th? My husband knows this date.

Demilune Realness

I wanted to share my latest crafting DIY adventure! I have been working on decorating this one wall of my living room, or formal parlor (as I like to refer to it as) for a month! Here is the fruit of my endeavor!

I took a regular glass mason jar and spray painted it gold in several layers until it was fully opaque. Spray paint is magic. I have the perfect place to do it too–my high ceilinged, unfinished basement! Then I took the bouquet from my wedding and plopped it in! I made my own silk flower arrangement and wrapped it in thick satin ribbon for the day of my wedding. I bought everything at Michaels and the total cost was about $6, I believe. It will last forever and add a bit of romantic sentiment in my home decor ;).

The gold square tray is from my local thrift shop and the trinket tray is from my sis in law who I believe got it at her local Goodwill. It’s also romantic looking and serves as a great white chalk holder!
I’m so proud of this hanging creation! I upcycled the heck out of this moldy old mirror I dug out from the basement. It had crooked legs from where it used to attach to this moldy dresser we got rid of when we moved in. I had the hubby remove those legs and I disinfected this grimy piece.

For the aged wooden frame, I spray painted it shiny gold to give it a luxe look! You’ll notice the top part is only slightly spray painted because I wanted the gold to have a bronzed look on the wood.

The mirror was stained and really dull looking so I knew I was not going to use it as a mirror. Instead, I bought a craft foam brush and a few small bottles of chalkboard paint to repurpose this! I used up 1.5 30ml bottles of the paint; enough to do 2.5 layers. I left that dry for a whole day. I watched this video online that said to prime the chalkboard with chalk before using it but I skipped that part. I found it was easy to write on it already!

The last thing I did was order this espresso dark wood demilune table from Amazon. I needed an accent table that had two layers so that one would serve as decor while the other would serve as storage. I took the leftover gift basket from one of those Wine and Country gift baskets and made it into my cat’s toy box! It tickles me pink when I come home from work to a few toys scattered around the house. This tells me she has her favorites :). And now, I announce that my living room is full and fully decorated!

Bright Styles

This is my first time using China Glaze nail polish. I was surprised by the matte finish and streaky look. I chose this poppin’ goldenrod color to help usher in a fresh spring. The ring finger is accented with a purple flowers sticker! It took almost 4 coats of this polish to get an acceptable opacity level. I also wish the brush were a little more flatter and wider for easier application.

The nail wraps I did 2 weeks ago were still intact and needed a huge amount of remover to get the darn things off. Lasting power is crazy good, I would say.
Craft time! I painted a simple wooden 4×6 picture frame with acrylics, then cut some nicely patterned craft paper and glued it to the back. I then used the Urban Decay tattoo glitter set I have to create a golden dove silhouette. Any loose glitter is protected by the glass! This piece will serve as minor decor to a bigger craft project I’ve been working on. I am waiting on an Amazon gift card in the mail so I can realize this fanciful visualization I have in my head right now. It involves upcycling and major crafting! Stay tuned!  My Pangur cat LOVES hanging out in the sink. She chose the guest bathroom sink this time as a first so of course I had to photograph this for the archives.

Garden Delights

Without any prior planning, purchasing, seeding or really any maintenance, I found that at this time of year, I have multi-colored day lilies blooming all around my property!  This one is my particular favorite. The color really is spectacular–a deep pinkish fuchsia with subtle white stripes and a warm yellow center. It is such a surprise and delight to discover these blooming after such a dreary winter.

Now these here are the tangerine/coral variety and have recently spouted up all over my front yard. I cut several buds and arranged them in a pretty vase. I also forgot that they are day lilies; meaning they bloom and wilt within a period of a day. When they bloom, they are large and magnificent. When they wilt, they get this awful purple juice on my white wicker furniture. Maybe they don’t make the best table centerpiece indoors, but I thought it would brighten up my sunroom so much!

These lovelies are my hydrangeas. I only know this variety of flower from Harry Potter book 5 :). Just look at these velvety, lush petals! The pink is vibrant and the lavender shade is mixed with a je ne sui pas hint of periwinkle. Beautiful! These last much longer than the day lilies as home decor pieces. They have been going for a week strong now!

Mid-July mani time! I used H&M mint shade on the bluish side and drew a vertical stripe using an e.l.f metallic pink. I like the pastel/pool like they create.

This past weekend, my OSU gals paid me a quick visit! We went hiking and frisbee throwing in Frick park. Check out our daring ravine escapade!

This image is courtesy of my friend Lauren (from above). She enjoyed my landscaping efforts and wanted to capture the spirit of our pond/waterfall from this view.

Dinner & a Show

This is one of the best meals I’ve had in a restaurant for all of this year so far.  Holy moly, my food was good! Last Thursday, the hubby took me by surprise and whisked me off downtown as soon as he got back from the airport. We dined at Cambodican Kitchen and it was tasty tasty! I got the signature chicken kabob dish and you can tell by the picture how juicy, fresh and well seasoned the chicken looked. They have “moon” sauce that is to die for! Service was wonderful with them custom cooking me some veggies because the kabob dish didn’t come with any. Yum yum. Portion size was big so both the hubs and I took our yumminess home for a second meal the next day! The only reason I am not back there again is that they are cash only. I know it keeps costs down from the restaurant’s standpoint but it ‘s a major inconvenience for customers. The atmosphere was cramped, stifling and greasy but the food really was extraordinary.   We did it! We bought a whole patio furniture set and had dinner and lunch outside this weekend to enjoy the lovely non-sweltering rays of sunlight. I made a pitcher of iced cucumber water and felt like a million bucks sitting outside my very own solarium. Next step: a chic bistro set to place inside the bigger gazebo.

The hubs further surprised me by taking me to see Chris Tucker live at Heinz Hall on Friday! These were the best tickets we’ve ever allowed ourselves to buy. I’m so used to sitting in the balcony that these fancy mezzanine seats really made a difference!

Landscaping

Here I am modeling gazebo #1 on a sunny April day warm enough to finally go outside. There is a gas line in this gazebo so it holds the potential to put a grill here for summer BBQ parties! I can’t wait to spruce up all the outside parts of my house and make it suitable for all sorts of soirees that I will host! Entertaining, here I come!

As I am typing this post, a hired professional is power-washing our entire deck after a vacancy of three years by the previous owners! It’s like a much-needed bath for all that otherwise beautiful and sturdy Trex deck! The hubby and I will have to learn gardening soon if we don’t want the neighbors to sneer at our lawn!

And…our pond is open for business! Well, we took off the net for its official “unveiling” but I guess it’s not quite functional just yet. Next steps include pumping out the old water, clearing any debris inside, filling with fresh water, getting some circulation going and testing out the lighting! All fun-sounding tasks that will probably be costly…

I had a lot of fun just skipping around the perimeter exploring. I found a stone tortoise, a stone turtle and a cute stone bear holding an acorn lamp! Oh, the treasures to be found and adventures to be had in my own backyard this summer!
